There are 2.3 million searches being conducted on Google every second, according to this data. This represents a huge opportunity for companies of all sizes to get their message in front of their audience. In this article, I’ll talk about what AdWords is, and how to use it to grow your business. Let’s start.
What is Google AdWords?AdWords is Google’s pay-per-click (PPC) advertising platform which companies can use to advertise their products or services. AdWords use pay-per-click method for calculating costs. This means that advertisers only pay when somebody clicks on their ad.
Advertisers bid on certain keywords they want to rank for and Google chooses to show them ads from advertiser pool bidding on that keyword.
A keyword is a specific phrase an advertiser bids on and wants to rank for. However, keywords are not the same as search queries (the terms people enter into Google). Don’t let this confuse you, it’s actually really simple.
For example, a keyword an advertiser bids on could be “dog food”, and a search query someone types could be “buy dog food online”. If your ad wins in the auction against other ads, it will appear in the Google’s search engine page results (SERP), and the user may click on it. The two factors that decided what ads will show are maximum bid and Quality Score.
Quality scoreQuality score is determined by several factors such as:
- Ad copy relevance. This means that your ad must be about the product you’re offering.
- Landing page quality. Your landing pages (parts of website you redirect your visitors to) should be relevant and well-designed.
- Ad’s click-through rate (CTR). Basically this means that the more people click your ad, the better it will rank since Google will recognize it’s useful to users.
- Historical account performance. This is a more advanced algorithm that takes several account-based factors into consideration, but it’s not important like the factors mentioned above.
Speaking of costs, you may be wondering how much does Adwords cost?
There’s no definitive answer, since it depends on factors such as your industry, location, Quality Score, budget and other factors. But it’s definitely not expensive - especially when you think about how high the return on investment (ROI) can be.
Let’s take a look at some numbers. Data by Wordstream indicates that average cost-per-click (CPC) is $2.32 in the US, and usually lower in other countries.

How to use Google advertising to grow your businessNow that I’ve explained what Google advertising, or AdWords is, let’s talk about how it can be used to reach new customers and grow your business. AdWords lets you reach a huge audience for a relatively small cost.
If you create and optimize your campaigns well, you can get a huge ROI really fast. That’s one of the great things about AdWords – it gives you results fast, and lets you monitor them in real-time.
- Fast, measurable results
- Highly targeted
- Ability to use remarketing
For example, if you want to advertise your app and get people to download it, you can create a specific campaign around it. Or if you have a webshop, you can create ads for each product and start getting customers the same day.
You’re always in control of your campaigns, budget, ads, targeting and other settings, and you can change them in an instant. Of course, creating a campaign isn’t enough on its own, you have to monitor your results and optimize your campaign accordingly (remove underperforming ads, experiment with different keywords etc.).
Now that you know what Google advertising is, and you understand what keywords and Google ads are you can start utilizing AdWords to drive customers to your website and grow your business.
What to do next?
You can start doing it on your own, by creating an AdWords account and learning on the go, experimenting with keywords, bidding strategies, ad copy and everything else as you try to achieve your business goals. Or you can contact us and let us handle all the work and watch your business grow.
